The Bank of England has initiated a public consultation to gather opinions on the theme for its next series of banknotes. This consultation, starting today, July 2, 2025, invites the public to suggest themes they would like to see represented. Since 1970, notable historical figures have been featured on banknotes, beginning with William Shakespeare.

Victoria Cleland, Chief Cashier at the Bank of England, emphasized the symbolic importance of banknotes in representing national identity and celebrating the UK. “I am really keen to hear what themes the public would like to see represented on the next series of notes,” she said.

The consultation outlines six potential themes: notable historical figures, architecture and landmarks, arts, culture and sport, noteworthy events in history, innovation, and nature. The public is also welcome to propose additional themes for consideration.

Regardless of the chosen theme(s), the new banknotes will include a portrait of the monarch. Designing these notes is a complex process that involves several years of development to ensure quality and resilience. Further feedback may be sought from the public regarding specific images for the selected theme.

The consultation period ends at 11:59 pm on July 31, 2025. Responses are particularly encouraged from UK residents and British citizens abroad via an online form or by post.
