Participants in the pilot program for the digital ruble, including individuals and companies from over 150 localities in the Russian Federation, have opened approximately 2,500 wallets and conducted about 100,000 transactions on the digital ruble platform. The Bank of Russia has released interim results of this pilot and outlined plans for further development of this new form of national currency in a report titled “Digital Ruble: Current Status.”

The pilot not only tested simple operations but also focused on improving customer experience and addressing security issues such as protection against cyberattacks and ensuring data privacy. Preliminary findings indicated that the platform is efficient and resilient.

According to the document, “the Bank of Russia is currently holding additional consultations with banks participating in the project and government agencies regarding the economic model of the digital ruble,” specifically exploring popular scenarios for implementing smart contracts. These developments aim to leverage the innovative potential of this new form of currency to enhance economic efficiency, including fiscal processes.

Future plans include expanding the platform’s functionality to enable payments in e-commerce, connecting individual entrepreneurs to the platform, and facilitating payments for mass and regular operations according to registers.
