Megan Greene has been reappointed as an external member of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) by Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Greene’s initial term was set to conclude on July 4, 2026, but her reappointment extends her service until July 4, 2029.
Rachel Reeves expressed support for Greene’s continued role, stating: “I am pleased to reappoint Megan Greene to the MPC. Her reappointment provides welcome stability at a crucial time, and I fully support the Bank of England in bringing inflation down. I am confident that Megan’s skills and background in financial markets will remain an asset to the MPC.”
Andrew Bailey, Governor of the Bank of England, also welcomed Greene’s reappointment: “I welcome the reappointment of Megan Greene to the MPC. Megan has made a significant contribution to the Committee’s work at an important time. I’m pleased it will continue to benefit from her insight and expertise in the years ahead.”
Greene is currently a Senior Fellow at both Brown University’s Watson Institute and Chatham House. She teaches at London Business School and advises various institutions including the San Francisco Federal Reserve and Rebuilding Macroeconomics. Her previous roles include Global Chief Economist at Kroll and John Hancock Asset Management.
The Bank of England’s independent MPC is responsible for monetary policy decisions and includes internal members such as its Governor and Chief Economist, along with four external members appointed by the Chancellor. These appointments aim to incorporate diverse expertise into monetary policy deliberations.
Reappointments like Greene’s are not automatic; they are assessed individually according to criteria outlined in the Governance Code for Public Appointments.
