At a recent U.S. Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee hearing, Chairman Tim Scott (R-S.C.) addressed the pressing issue of housing affordability in America. He underscored the need for deregulation and local solutions to tackle the crisis effectively.
Chairman Scott introduced the ROAD to Housing Act, a legislative proposal aimed at reforming various sectors of the housing market. The act seeks to increase affordable housing supply, enhance quality of life for families, and provide economic opportunities nationwide.
In his opening remarks, Scott shared personal experiences from his upbringing in poverty, emphasizing that housing is not merely about shelter but also about building a better future. “Owning a home has long been the pillar of the American Dream,” he stated, highlighting how this dream has become increasingly unattainable for many Americans under current conditions.
Scott criticized the Biden administration’s handling of housing affordability, noting significant increases in mortgage rates and rents since January 2021. He pointed out that homelessness has reached record highs despite substantial government investment in housing.
The hearing featured testimony from several experts: Eric Johnson, Mayor of Dallas; Lee Jelenic, Chief Innovation Officer at United Wholesale Mortgage; Edward Glaeser from Harvard University; and Renee Willis from the National Low Income Housing Coalition. These witnesses provided insights into federal housing policies’ impacts and discussed potential solutions.
Scott advocated for reducing regulatory barriers and streamlining development processes through his proposed legislation. He stressed that local communities are best positioned to address their unique housing challenges without federal overreach.
He called on both parties to collaborate on nonpartisan solutions to restore homeownership as part of the American Dream. “Housing should not be a partisan issue,” Scott asserted, urging cooperation across political lines to reverse failed policies and bring meaningful change to millions of Americans.
