Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen recently spoke at a press conference in Gandhinagar, India ahead of the third meeting of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors, where she reaffirmed the unwavering support for Ukraine and also condemned Russia's aggression. According to remarks Yellen at World Bank Supported Educational Site in Gandhinagar, the U.S. and coalition partners have a focus on bolstering Ukraine's defense against illegal actions by Russia, as well as assisting with their budget.
"Our support for Ukraine is unwavering," Yellen said. "The United States will stand by Ukraine for as long as necessary, and our coalition allies and partners will do the same. Budgetary assistance is crucial for Ukraine's resilience."
According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the U.S. has provided financial aid to Ukraine that includes $26.4 billion in budgetary support. This is through the Economic Support Fund, loans and other forms of financial assistance. The U.S. has also provided $18.3 billion in security assistance, which includes training, equipment, weapons, logistics support and other forms of aid through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. Weapons and equipment worth $23.5 billion have also been provided for the Defense Department's stock through presidential drawdowns. Grants and loans for armaments and equipment come to $4.7 billion through the Foreign Military Financing program.
According to a July 19 release by the Department of Defense, a new security assistance package valued at $1.3 billion is for Ukraine's needs in the battlefield, and shows that U.S. has their support. The package is under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), and includes critical air defense capabilities and munitions.
In another release by the Department of Defense on July 7, the Biden Administration's commitment to Ukraine's security and defense was highlighted. The release discussed the provisions of equipment by the DoD to Ukraine, which is the 42nd time this type of assistance has been provided since August 2021.
"By helping keep the economy and the government running, we are giving Ukraine the support it needs so it can fight for freedom and its sovereignty," said Yellen.
