Gianforte: 'Creating healthier, more resilient Montana forests through active management is one of our top priorities'

Montana has achieved its annual sustainable timber yield target for its State Trust Land, according to an announcement made by Governor Greg Gianforte and the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) on October 5, 2023.

"Creating healthier, more resilient Montana forests through active management is one of our top priorities," stated Governor Gianforte.

Increasing the pace and scale of forest management is a key element of the governor's Montana Comeback Plan. This effort aims to improve forest health, boost wildlife habitat, and create jobs in Montana. Governor Gianforte emphasized the broader implications of achieving the timber production goals, including a reduced wildfire risk, enhanced forest health, and increased predictability for the wood products sector.

During the 2023 fiscal year, DNRC reported the sale of 52 million board feet of timber, generating revenues exceeding $8 million. These funds will benefit Montana schools and other endowed institutions. Additionally, more than 13,000 acres of Montana State Trust Land were introduced to active forest management. This initiative aims to improve forest health, increase biological diversity, and mitigate the risk of wildfires.

Although State Trust Land comprises only about four percent of statewide timber ownership, it contributes significantly to Montana's overall timber production, ranging between 15 to 20%. This year, the state reached its sustainable yield goal by offering 62.5 million board feet of timber.

Dan Rogers, the Forest Management Bureau Chief overseeing State Trust Land's forest resources, praised DNRC's efforts, stating, "Our commitment to responsible forest management consistently yields exceptional results. The State Trust Land stands as an essential source for regional forest products, and our consistent supply of timber significantly benefits local economies."

Montana's achievement of its annual timber production goal demonstrates the state's commitment to proactive forest management and highlights the positive outcomes that can be achieved through sustainable practices.
