Rep. Kim Testifies in Support of the Iran Counterterrorism Act of 2023

Representative Young Kim (CA-40) testified before the House Committee on Rules in support of her bill, H.R. 6323, the Iran Counterterrorism Act of 2023. The bill aims to address Iran's support for international terrorism and the need for greater congressional oversight on U.S. sanctions waivers for Tehran.

Kim emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "Israel is confronting a critical moment as it fights for its right to exist. Iran and its proxies continue to attack our greatest ally in the middle east and the lone democracy in the region." She highlighted Iran's direct aggression towards Israel, citing recent drone and missile attacks launched from Iranian soil.

The Congresswoman underscored the importance of H.R. 6323 in preventing the abuse of waiver authority, especially in light of past instances where waivers did not deter Iran from hostile actions. The bill requires Iran to cease support for international terrorism before any future waivers can be invoked, ensuring congressional review and oversight.

Kim also clarified that the legislation does not affect existing sanctions exemptions for essential items like food, medicine, and medical devices. The bipartisan support for the bill was evident as it passed the Financial Services Committee with a vote of 30 to 19, demonstrating potential for broad support across party lines.

In closing, Representative Kim urged her colleagues to take action against Iran and stand in solidarity with Israel. She expressed readiness to address any questions from Committee Members, signaling her commitment to advancing the Iran Counterterrorism Act of 2023.
