Most Russians preferred cashless payments in 2023, according to recent data. The most popular methods of these payments were bank card payments (75%), mobile and online bank payments (48%), and payments via the Faster Payment System (28%).
The proportion of those who preferred to use cash in everyday transactions edged down over the year from 27% to 24% of all respondents. As many as 29% of respondents paid in ready cash because they were unable to make cashless payments, while 13% did so out of habit. Most often, Russian people used cash to pay for goods in small shops, markets, public transport, car service centers, cafés and restaurants, and at petrol stations.
The opinion poll showed that there were respondents preferring only online payments (6%) and true devotees of banknotes and coins (7%). Moreover, the number of those who could not do without a credit card was 1.8 times higher than the number of those who could not imagine their life without cash.
Russians predominantly preferred to keep their savings in bank deposits (39%), debit cards (35%), and in cash rubles (30%).
