On July 5, 2024, the Bank of Russia issued a two-ruble silver commemorative coin titled ‘Surgeon Alexander Vishnevsky,’ marking the 150th anniversary of his birth. This release is part of the Outstanding Personalities of Russia series (Catalogue No. 5110-0184).
Alexander Vishnevsky was a pioneer in domestic neurosurgery and authored over a hundred inventions. His developments in anesthesia and septic wound treatment saved hundreds of thousands during the Great Patriotic War. Vishnevsky also invented a liniment that remains in use today.
The two-ruble silver coin, with a fine metal content of 15.55 g and fineness of 925/1,000, has a round shape and measures 33.0 mm in diameter. Both sides of the coin feature a relief rim around the circumference.
The obverse side displays a relief image of the National Coat of Arms of the Russian Federation, along with inscriptions reading ‘РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ’ (RUSSIAN FEDERATION) and ‘БАНК РОССИИ’ (BANK OF RUSSIA). It also includes the denomination ‘2 РУБЛЯ’ (2 RUBLES), year ‘2024 г.’ (2024), chemical symbol for silver from Mendeleev’s Periodic Table, fineness, Saint Petersburg Mint trademark, and fine metal content.
The reverse side features images including a portrait of Alexander Vishnevsky sitting at a table with surgical instruments and the Bowl of Hygieia. Inscriptions around the circumference read "А. В. ВИШНЕВСКИЙ" (A.V. VISHNEVSKY), with his birth and death years ‘1874’ and ‘1948’ below. All design elements are cast in relief.
The edge of the coin is corrugated, and it is minted in proof quality with a mintage limit set at 3,000 pieces.
This new coin is legal tender within the Russian Federation and must be accepted for all types of payments without restrictions at its face value.
