Senate committee reviews key financial regulatory nominations

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, delivered an opening statement at a nominations hearing for several key financial regulatory positions.

The nominees under consideration were Christy Goldsmith Romero for Chairperson and Member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation; Caroline A. Crenshaw for Member of the Securities and Exchange Commission; Kristin N. Johnson for Assistant Secretary of the Treasury; and Gordon I. Ito for Member of the Financial Stability Oversight Council.

Senator Brown emphasized the bipartisan support these nominees have received in previous confirmations. "In a Washington that is far too divided, far too often, Democrats and Republicans on this Committee and in the Senate have agreed that these nominees possess the experience and character to serve the public," he stated.

Christy Goldsmith Romero was highlighted as a nominee with extensive experience in financial services, having served as a Commissioner on the Commodity Futures Trading Commission since 2022 and previously at the SEC. "Ms. Goldsmith Romero’s nomination comes at a pivotal time," said Brown, citing her qualifications to lead necessary cultural changes within FDIC.

Caroline Crenshaw's renomination to a full term on the SEC was also discussed. Brown noted her advocacy for market fairness during her tenure since 2020 and acknowledged her service as an Army Reserve Captain in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps.

Kristin Johnson was nominated to serve as Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions at the Department of Treasury. Her background includes roles in academia and public service, currently serving as a Commissioner on CFTC after unanimous Senate confirmation in 2022.

Gordon Ito was nominated to be an independent insurance expert on FSOC. His career spans over three decades within Hawaii's insurance division where he has held multiple leadership roles including Secretary-Treasurer with NAIC.

Senator Brown concluded by thanking all nominees for their willingness to serve.
