Toropets, an ancient town in the Tver Region, was first mentioned in chronicles in 1074. According to legend, Alexander Nevsky married in a church in the town, and Patriarch Tikhon spent his childhood there.
On July 12, 2024, the Bank of Russia issued a ten-ruble base metal commemorative coin titled ‘Toropets, Tver Region’ as part of the Ancient Towns of Russia series (Catalogue No. 5714-0100).
The coin is round with a diameter of 27.0 mm and is composed of a disc and an outer ring. Both sides feature a relief rim around the circumference. The edge is corrugated with inscriptions 'ДЕСЯТЬ РУБЛЕЙ' (TEN RUBLES) recurring twice and divided by asterisks.
The obverse side includes inscriptions around the circumference: 'БАНК РОССИИ' (BANK OF RUSSIA) at the top and '2024' at the bottom. Images of laurel and oak twigs are on the left and right sides of the outer ring, respectively, extending onto the disc. The figure ‘10’ and inscription 'РУБЛЕЙ' (RUBLES) denoting its face value are centered on the disc. Inside the figure ‘0’ is a security element featuring '10' and 'РУБ' (RUB), visible from various angles. The Moscow Mint trademark appears at the bottom of the disc.
The reverse side features a relief image of Toropets' coat of arms and part of its panorama, with relief inscriptions around: 'ДРЕВНИЕ ГОРОДА РОССИИ' (ANCIENT TOWNS OF RUSSIA) at the top and 'ТОРОПЕЦ' (TOROPETS) at the bottom.
The mintage for this coin is set at 1 million pieces. It is legal tender in Russia, mandatory for acceptance for all payments without any restrictions at face value.
