On August 30, 2024, the Bank of Russia will issue a 3-ruble silver commemorative coin titled ‘The 300th Anniversary of the Saint Petersburg State University’ as part of its Historical Events series. The university was founded by the Decree of Peter the Great on February 8, 1724 (January 28 under the Julian calendar) based on the Academy of Sciences and became Russia's first university. Today, Saint Petersburg State University is one of Russia's most renowned universities and a major research and development center.
The 3-ruble silver coin, with a fine metal content of 31.1 grams and a fineness of 925/1,000, has a round shape and is 39.0 mm in diameter.
Both sides of the coin feature a relief rim around the circumference.
The obverse side displays a relief image of the National Coat of Arms of the Russian Federation along with inscriptions reading ‘РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ’ (RUSSIAN FEDERATION) and ‘БАНК РОССИИ’ (BANK OF RUSSIA). It also includes the denomination ‘3 РУБЛЯ’ (3 RUBLES), the year ‘2024 г.’ (2024), the chemical symbol for silver from Mendeleev’s Periodic Table, fineness details, the Saint Petersburg Mint trademark, and fine metal content.
The reverse side features relief images of Saint Petersburg State University's main building and its symbol framed with a line pattern that has been laser treated for matte finishing. The inscriptions read ‘САНКТ-ПЕТЕРБУРГСКИЙ ГОСУДАРСТВЕННЫЙ УНИВЕРСИТЕТ’ (SAINT PETERSBURG STATE UNIVERSITY) at the top around the circumference and ‘осн. в 1724 г.’ (founded in 1724) at the bottom.
The edge of this coin is corrugated.
This coin is minted in proof quality with a mintage limited to 3.0 thousand pieces.
It is legal tender within the Russian Federation and must be accepted for all types of payments without restrictions at its face value.
