Banks thwart almost 14 million cyber theft attempts in early 2024

In the first quarter of 2024, banks thwarted nearly 13.9 million attempts by cybercriminals to steal funds from clients, as reported in the Review of Reporting on Information Security Incidents Related to Funds Transfers. This achievement is attributed to credit institutions' ongoing efforts to enhance their anti-fraud systems and improve business processes ahead of new legislation aimed at countering cyber fraud.

Despite these advancements, challenges persist. During this period, criminals succeeded in stealing ₽4.3 billion from bank clients, a decrease of 6.3% compared to the same quarter in 2023. However, individual losses surpassed the average theft figures of 2023 by 8%, while the number of fraudulent transactions remained largely unchanged.

The Bank of Russia played a significant role by initiating the blocking of 14,800 fraudulent websites and social media pages. Additionally, it provided communication operators with details on 48,600 phone numbers used by fraudsters for further blocking.
