On October 18, 2024, the Bank of Russia released two silver commemorative coins in celebration of the 300th anniversary of the Saint Petersburg Mint. These coins are part of the Historical Events series and come in denominations of 3 rubles and 200 rubles.
The Saint Petersburg Mint is recognized as one of the largest mints globally. Established by a decree from Peter the Great, it is located within the Peter and Paul Fortress in Saint Petersburg. The mint produces various items including precious metal commemorative and investment coins, government awards, medals, and tokens. It also marks some of the largest gold and silver commemorative coins issued by the Bank of Russia.
The newly issued 3-ruble coin contains fine metal content weighing 31.1 grams with a fineness of 925/1,000. The larger 200-ruble coin contains fine metal content weighing 3,000 grams with similar fineness specifications. Both coins have round shapes with diameters measuring 39 mm for the smaller coin and 130 mm for the larger one.
Each coin features detailed engravings on both sides. The obverse side displays a relief image of Russia's National Coat of Arms along with inscriptions such as "РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ" (RUSSIAN FEDERATION), "БАНК РОССИИ" (BANK OF RUSSIA), denomination details ("3 РУБЛЯ" for three rubles or "200 РУБЛЕЙ" for two hundred rubles), year "2024 г." (2024), chemical symbols from Mendeleev’s Periodic Table indicating metal type and fineness, along with trademark identifiers from the Saint Petersburg Mint.
The reverse side designs vary between each denomination:
- The reverse side of the 3-ruble coin (Catalogue No. 5111-0512) includes images such as a coining press, historical currency depictions like those from a ruble dated back to 1724 and a fifty-kopeck piece from1924; plus architectural elements featuring matte laser-treated finishes showcasing aspects like microrelief patterns inducing light interference effects; all circumscribed by inscriptions stating “САНКТ-ПЕТЕРБУРГСКИЙ МОНЕТНЫЙ ДВОР” (SAINT PETERSBURG MINT) encircling “300 ЛЕТ” (300 YEARS).
- Meanwhile on its counterpart -the heavier weighted yet limited edition run consisting only half-thousand copies-, namely: Catalogue No.,5119–0008 respectively which portrays Peter himself alongside machinery like copying lathes accompanied likewise showing reverses across several epochs notably including investment ones depicting “Saint George victorious”.
