Senator Brown seeks details on flood insurance funding after recent hurricanes

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown has reached out to FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell seeking detailed information about the National Flood Insurance Program's (NFIP) funding and resource requirements. This request comes in the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which have caused significant damage to homes.

In his communication, Brown inquired about NFIP's current capacity to pay claims, the number of claims already filed, expected future claims due to the hurricanes, and advance payments made to policyholders. He also sought clarification on how FEMA plans to assist policyholders during the claims process.

Brown emphasized the importance of flood insurance in helping families and businesses recover from flood damage. "Flood insurance offered through the program helps both families and businesses rebuild and recover when their property has been damaged by a flood," he stated. He stressed that it is crucial for NFIP to have adequate resources to meet its obligations promptly.

The letter from Brown highlighted the necessity for prompt claim payments, noting that homeowners and business owners who have paid their premiums should not be left unsupported. The letter also requested details on FEMA's oversight plans for handling claims related to these large-scale flooding events.

"Thank you for your ongoing work to support disaster survivors and to ensure that NFIP policyholders receive all insurance benefits to which they are entitled," Brown concluded in his letter.
