Bank of Canada announces finalists for Governor’s Challenge

The Bank of Canada has announced the six finalist teams for the 2024-25 Governor’s Challenge. This competition allows university students to act as advisors to the Bank’s Governing Council.

This year, in recognition of the competition's tenth anniversary and the high level of economic thinking demonstrated by participants, the Bank has increased the number of finalist teams from five to six.

The universities that made it to the finals are Université de Sherbrooke, University of Guelph, University of Alberta, Wilfrid Laurier University, University of Ottawa, and Western University. Runner-up teams include HEC Montréal, Carleton University, and University of Toronto - Scarborough.

The first round took place on November 13 and 14, 2024. Over 100 students from 26 Canadian universities participated. The final round is scheduled for February 1, 2025.

Participants worked in teams to analyze and forecast economic developments. They then presented monetary policy recommendations aimed at maintaining low and stable inflation in accordance with the Bank’s target of 2 percent. Judges assessed teams based on their analysis' substance, presentation quality, and teamwork strength.

Last year's winner was Université de Sherbrooke.
