On December 3, 2024, the Bank of Russia released a new commemorative coin celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Moscow Art Public Theatre. The coin is a tribute to the theatre founded by K.S. Stanislavsky and V.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko, with its design prominently featuring elements significant to the theatre's history.
The coin commemorates one of the first plays staged at the theatre, "The Seagull" by A. Chekhov. This play has become emblematic for the theatre, with a flying seagull symbolizing its legacy and decorating both the historic curtain and this new coin.
This 3-ruble silver coin is rectangular, measuring 51 mm in length and 32 mm in width with rounded corners. It is crafted from fine metal content weighing 31.1 grams with a fineness of 925/1,000.
The obverse side of the coin showcases a relief image of the National Coat of Arms of the Russian Federation along with inscriptions including "РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ" (RUSSIAN FEDERATION), "БАНК РОССИИ" (BANK OF RUSSIA), and other details such as its denomination "3 РУБЛЯ" (3 RUBLES) and year of issue "2024 г." (2024). It also includes technical specifications like chemical symbols from Mendeleev’s Periodic Table, fineness, Saint Petersburg Mint trademark, and fine metal content.
On the reverse side is an image of the historic front curtain featuring a flying gull. This design is enhanced with laser treatment for matte finishing and accompanied by inscriptions: “125 ЛЕТ” (125 YEARS) at the top in two lines and “ХУДОЖЕСТВЕННО-ОБЩЕДОСТУПНЫЙ ТЕАТРЪ” (ART PUBLIC THEATRE) at the bottom in stylized font.
The edge of this proof-quality coin is corrugated, adding to its distinctive appearance. The mintage for this edition is limited to 3,000 pieces.
This newly issued coin holds legal tender status within the Russian Federation and must be accepted for all types of payments without restrictions at its face value.
