Tim Scott becomes first Black chairman of a Senate standing committee

Today, U.S. Senator Tim Scott from South Carolina announced that he will make history as the first Black chairman of a Senate standing committee when he takes on the leadership role of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs in the 119th Congress. This milestone also marks him as the longest-serving Black senator in United States history.

Senator Scott expressed his commitment to serving South Carolinians and advancing his Opportunity Agenda, aiming to provide every American with a chance to achieve their version of the American Dream.

"As we begin the 119th Congress, Senate Republicans have high enthusiasm and are focused on delivering for the American people! This Congress, I am thrilled to serve as the Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee," said Scott. "My goal is simple: make America work for Americans. As we get to work cleaning up the mess from the previous administration, I look forward to working with President Trump on his priorities, including paving a path for all Americans to have the necessary tools and resources to achieve their version of the American Dream. We will unlock opportunity, strengthen our nation, and make America the shining city on the Hill again."

Scott will collaborate with several Republican members on this committee: Mike Crapo from Idaho; Mike Rounds from South Dakota; Thom Tillis from North Carolina; John Kennedy from Louisiana; Bill Hagerty from Tennessee; Cynthia Lummis from Wyoming; Katie Britt from Alabama; Pete Ricketts from Nebraska; Jim Banks from Indiana; Kevin Cramer from North Dakota; Bernie Moreno from Ohio; and Dave McCormick from Pennsylvania.
