The Senate has confirmed Scott Turner as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) with a vote of 55-44. Chairman Tim Scott, a Republican from South Carolina, praised Turner's qualifications and expressed optimism about their shared goal to address the housing crisis and improve access to affordable housing across the United States.
Chairman Scott emphasized Turner's experience during his hearing before the Senate Banking Committee. He highlighted Turner's leadership in directing investments in Opportunity Zones, an initiative under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act aimed at boosting development in economically distressed areas. Scott expressed eagerness to collaborate with Turner to streamline bureaucratic processes and promote practical housing solutions.
In his remarks, Chairman Scott criticized the previous administration's handling of HUD, citing a rise in homelessness and increased mortgage rates as significant issues. "The latest homelessness survey found an 18 percent increase in homelessness year-over-year," he stated, noting that nearly 772,000 Americans are currently without homes.
Scott also addressed the affordability crisis, pointing out that "mortgage rates ballooned 150 percent, and rents 20 percent" during President Biden's tenure. He attributed these challenges to what he described as "far-left housing policies and burdensome regulations."
Scott Turner brings a diverse background to his new role. A native Texan with a history as a professional athlete, Turner transitioned from playing nine seasons in the NFL to serving two terms in the Texas State Legislature. He later worked within the Trump administration as Executive Director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council.
Turner’s efforts led to over $50 billion being directed into hard-hit communities through private sector capital investments with minimal gentrification effects. His story is seen by Chairman Scott as vital for addressing current housing challenges.
"As HUD Secretary, Scott will make himself known," said Chairman Scott. "He will create access to quality, affordability housing…he will work to reverse decades of failed housing policies."
Chairman Scott concluded by expressing gratitude for Turner's appointment and confidence in his ability to lead HUD effectively.
