In 2024, the prevalence of counterfeit rubles in Russia decreased significantly, reaching its lowest level in recent years. The rate was recorded at only one counterfeit per one million banknotes in circulation. Throughout the year, a total of 8,240 counterfeit Russian banknotes and coins were identified within the banking system. Among these, 5,000-ruble and 1,000-ruble notes were the most frequently counterfeited, making up 64% and 27% of the total detected counterfeits respectively.
Additionally, there were 1,875 counterfeit foreign banknotes discovered. Of these foreign notes, US dollars accounted for a substantial 93%.
