The city of Yuryevets, the oldest in the Ivanovo Region, is marking its 800th anniversary. Founded by Grand Prince George II of Vladimir to safeguard North-Eastern Rus's eastern borders, Yuryevets holds historical significance. Legend has it that an icon of Saint George the Victorious appeared to the prince in a vision at this location, which led to the city's naming.
Renowned for its scenic views at the confluence of the Volga, Nyomda, and Unzha Rivers, Yuryevets has inspired artists such as Isaac Levitan and Alexey Savrasov. The city is also linked to filmmaker Andrey Tarkovsky, who attended primary school there and considered it his childhood homeland.
To commemorate this milestone, on July 7, 2025, the Bank of Russia will issue a 3-ruble silver coin titled "The 800th Anniversary of the Foundation of Yuryevets" as part of its Cities series (Catalogue No. 5111-0522). The coin weighs 31.1 grams with a fineness of 925/1,000 and measures 39 mm in diameter.
The coin's obverse displays a relief image of the Russian Federation's National Coat of Arms alongside inscriptions including 'РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ' (RUSSIAN FEDERATION) and 'БАНК РОССИИ' (BANK OF RUSSIA), among other details like denomination and year. The reverse features relief images representing Yuryevets' coat of arms and Georgievskaya Square against a Volga River backdrop.
Minted in proof quality with a mintage limited to 3,000 pieces, this coin is legal tender within Russia and must be accepted for payments at face value.
